Happy New Year! It’s time to get back into the creative swing of things so I thought we would start off with this fun little project. This classic game of Tic Tac Toe can now travel with you in style! You might even have the materials already on-hand to create this fun project. It’s a great way to upcycle an old shirt, ribbon scraps, and loose buttons.
This project requires an intermediate skill level and takes about two hours to complete. You can hand sew this or use a machine.
Here are the materials you will need for this tic tac toe game:
2 sets of coordinating buttons (5 of each style) 1 inch Black Houndstooth Buttons 470002204 and 1 inch Black and White Skull Buttons 470001404
1 small bead (1/4 inch opening)
1/2 yard of fabric
1 yard of 1/4 inch wide Offray Double Face Satin, Black
1 yard of 5/8 inch wide Offray Grosgrain Ribbon, Black
Safety Pin
Ruler or Measuring Tape
Scissors
Coordinating thread & needle (if hand sewing)
Once you have gathered your materials, follow these instructions:
Start by cutting two 8-1/2 inch square pieces of fabric. Cut four 5 inch pieces of grosgrain ribbon. On the front of one piece of fabric, pin the ribbon in place to form a hashtag shape starting 1 inch from the bottom and leaving the extra room on top to fold over later. The center square should measure 1-1/2 inches. Sew the ribbon onto the fabric along the ribbon edges.
Place the other piece of fabric (right sides together) over this and sew along bottom and sides only.
Turn bag inside out and press seams. Fold top down 1/4 inch and press. Fold down again 1/2 inch, press then sew on bottom edge all the way around.
Carefully cut through one of the top seams on outside to thread ribbon. Cut 20 inches of satin ribbon. Attach a safety pin to one end of the ribbon and use it to thread the ribbon through the fold at the top of the bag.
Cut the ribbon ends on an angle and thread them through the bead. Tie a knot at the end to finish. Place the buttons inside the bag and use the bead to close the bag tight!
This cute little self-contained game makes a great party favor. Keep one in your purse, glove box, or travel bag so you are prepared for a spontaneous tic tac toe match!
HAPPY CRAFTING!!
